James Gunn creates Creature Commandos, the first series in the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters
Creature Commandos Season 1 is the upcoming first season of an animated superhero television series produced by DC studios and Warner Bros Animation. The series is based on JM DeMatteis and Pat Broderick 1980s DC comics characters of the same name made for Weird War Tales #93. Creature Commandos is the first series in the DC Universe (DCU) headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and takes place in the phase they call “Chapter 1: ‘Gods and Monsters’”. Gunn is known for helming the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy films for Disney.
Creature Commandos stars Viola Davis as FBI official Amanda Waller, reprising her role from Suicide Squad. The team of monsters she assembles includes the Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Rick Flag Sr (Frank Grillo), Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), Circe (Anya Chalotra), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), and Weasel and GI Robot (both played by Sean Gunn). Steve Agee reprises his role as John Economos from The Suicide Squad, and newcomer Maria Bakalova plays Princess Ilana Rostovic.
