The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The latest news about The Lego Movie 3 is finally here. Since the release of the second movie, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, the franchise has been quiet about a third installment. There have been a host of canceled projects including The Billion Brick Race, a movie that was set to be voiced by Emma Stone and Diego Luna, and Lego Superfriends, another DC Comics and Lego crossover. Now we know at least two exciting pieces of information about the upcoming adventure movie.

The upcoming third Lego movie will apparently be a hybrid of live-action and animation, going back to the roots to the franchise. It is unclear who is currently signed on to be starring in the movie but it may be the case that they are doing more than just voice acting. In 2022, it was previously reported by Movieweb that the third Lego Movie was in ‘active development’ by producer Dan Lin. He went on to say “we know we have to switch it up & take to a different art form that's still true to Lego. We should have some announcements soon... I think we've reinvented it in a cool way.” Clearly, the team behind the latest Lego Movie has known that something in their formula has to change.

The first Lego Movie was boundary-breaking and wowed audiences and critics alike, even finding itself nominated for a slew of exciting awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The movie was directed by the acclaimed duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who would go on to blockbuster success with Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and its sequel. The follow-up Lego Batman Movie was also a success but marked the last time the franchise received both critical and commercial acclaim. The Lego Ninjago Movie and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part were both underwhelming in their own ways.

Bringing new energy and life into the Lego Movie franchise is a pair of exciting directors who have signed on to helm the third movie. Aaron and Adam Nee reportedly have signed a deal with Universal to resuscitate the franchise. The pair are best known for their recent hit movie The Lost City led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. The movie also boasts an incredible ensemble cast including appearances from Brad Pitt, Daniel Radcliffe, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. The movie was a box office success and was met with broadly positive reviews for its fresh take on the action-adventure genre.

The Nee brothers were most recently set up to direct a reboot of Masters of the Universe for streaming giant Netflix. However, the latest news from Variety confirms that the project is no longer going forward. Despite a significant initial outlay on production and having already cast Kyle Allen as He-Man, the movie has been canceled. The disappointing news for Aaron and Adam Nee also opens the path for them to work on the next Lego Movie in a deal that was reportedly struck quite sometime before the current strike.

The Lego Movie 3 currently has no specific release date.
