Greta Gerwig directs highly anticipated Barbie live-action film
Barbie is a romantic comedy co-written and directed by Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig. Gerwig has previously directed Lady Bird and Little Women. Noah Baumbach co-wrote the script with Gerwig. Baumbach is also an Academy Award nominee, whose work includes Marriage Story, While We’re Young and The Squid and the Whale.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star in this Barbie live-action film. Robbie also serves as executive producer. The film’s ensemble cast includes Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), singer Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), Emma Mackey (Sex Education), Alexandra Shipp (tick, tick… Boom!), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) and more. Helen Mirren (The Queen) voices the narrator in the movie.
The film is produced by LuckyChap Entertainment and Mattel Films, and is inspired by the iconic Barbie doll franchise. A Barbie live-action film has long been in the works, with the initial announcement from Universal Pictures in September 2009. Sony Pictures later acquired the rights in 2014. The rights were later acquired by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2018.
