Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is firmly in the number one spot, spending weeks at the top,  as fans rewatch the film in preparation for the release of the film’s sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The second film has dominated at the box office, netting over US$500 million in its first few weeks in theatres.

A second animated film makes the list with The Super Mario Bros Film at number five. Chris Pratt voices Mario as he faces off against Jack Black’s evil Bowser. James Cameron’s epic fantasy Avatar: The Way of Water also breaks the Top 10, after its release on streaming service Disney+ on June 7. It premiered in cinemas on December 16, 2022, and is the second out of five films in Cameron’s Avatar franchise.

  1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

  2. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant

  3. John Wick: Chapter 4

  4. Extraction 2

  5. The Super Mario Bros Film

  6. The Whale

  7. Avatar: The Way of Water

  8. Living

  9. M3GAN

  10. Air

While most movie franchises would have fizzled out by film number four, John Wick: Chapter 4 has done anything but. The film takes the number three spot in the monthly streaming charts. Keanu Reeves returns once more to play the titular hitman. With a US$100 million budget, the film has already made US$432 million worldwide. Extending out the John Wick franchise, Reeves is also executive producer of the spin-off television miniseries The Continental: From the World of John Wick. The spin-off prequel will focus on a young Winston Scott, owner of The Continental hotel (played by Colin Woodell). Mel Gibson also stars in the series as Cormac.

Standing strong in second place is Afghanistan war movie Guy Ritchie's The Covenant. The MGM movie released in April and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Master Sergeant John Kinley, with Dar Salim as Ahmed and Emily Beecham as Caroline Kinley. The film is available to stream on Prime Video.

Amazon Studios’ sports biopic Air rounds up the Top 10. Directed by Ben Affleck, Air tells the story of Nike’s mega 1980s gamble to sign Michael Jordan. The move changed the world of basketball, making Nike a major player in the game. The movie stars Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina and Viola Davis.

A number of the Top 10 films are available on Prime Video. Based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 film Ikiru, with a screenplay from Kazuo Ishiguro, Living is set in post-World War 2 London starring Bill Nighy. The film sits at eighth place on the charts.

In sixth place is The Whale, which is also available to stream on Prime Video. The film stars Brendan Fraser in his Academy, Critics’ Choice and SAG Award winning role as a morbidly obese English teacher trying to mend the relationship with his estranged daughter (played by Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink).

Extraction 2 takes fourth place, with the Chris Hemsworth action sequel debuting on Netflix on June 16. Just a few days after release, Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave confirmed that the franchise is returning for a third film. The announcement came at Netflix’s TUDUM event in Sao Paulo.

It’s a mix-bag of drama, war movies, action-thrillers, horror and animation in this month’s Top 10 movies. With Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continuing to do well at the box office, it begs the question whether its predecessor will remain at the top of the Top 10 streaming charts for another month in July.
