Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach team up to give Barbie an existential makeover
Barbie is an upcoming romantic comedy produced by LuckyChap Entertainment and Mattel Films. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written with her partner and fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach. Gerwig’s impressive filmography includes modern feminist gems Ladybird, Little Women, and Frances Ha — the latter of which she co-wrote with Baumbach. Baumbach meanwhile has written and directed acclaimed relationship dramas such as The Squid and the Whale and A Marriage Story.
Barbie is based on the iconic line of fashion dolls of the same name created by Ruth Handler for Mattel. The cinematic Barbie herself is played by Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street). Ken is brought to life by Ryan Gosling. The cast is rounded out by Will Ferrel, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Will Farrell, NIcola Coughlan, and America Ferrera.
