But when the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was formed they were facing the monumental task of sorting through a three-year backlog of mail that amounted to 17 million pieces. This battalion was the only army corps that allowed women of color to contribute to the war effort and saw these incredible women stationed in Europe to complete their task.
