Synopsis

In a quiet town of Japan's Kyushu region, a girl named Suzume finds herself entangled in a terrifying mystery 

Suzume, a wide-eyed seventeen year old meets a strange man who is seeking a very special door. When the two of them discover it in an old abandoned house in the mountains, Suzume is drawn to the handle by a captivating force. Stepping through, she opens a portal to the unknown. As more doors appear all over Japan, Suzume must travel across land and sea to lock each one closed and to stop the Doors of Disasters from destroying the country.

What to know

Director Makoto Shinkai returns with another dazzling multicolored anime adventure

Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume's Locking Up) is a fantasy adventure anime from lauded director Makoto Shinkai. Shinkai has a long history of filmmaking in Japan but has garnered commercial success worldwide with the movie, Your Name, which became the third highest-grossing anime of all time. Character designer, Masayoshi Tanak, and art director Takumi Tanji are both frequent collaborators of Makoto Shinkai and return for this movie.

After an open audition of many, Nanoka Hara was chosen as the voice of Suzume. The teenager is taking on her first anime voice-acting role and has been an enduring fan of the director's work, making it a dream debut for her. A novel adaptation of the film, written by Shinkai himself was released on August 24th, 2022. Suzume no Tojimari was released in cinemas on 14th April 2023.
