Synopsis

In 1859, an eleven-year-old girl, subsisting on the manna from heaven alone, is fast becoming a tourist sensation. In a small Irish village, the girl has not eaten anything in months and yet survives on her faith in an almighty God. From neighboring villages, they come to bear witness to Anna, the power of God. Fresh from the horrors of the Crimean War, Lib Wright is an English nurse who is called to the village to observe Anna. She is joined on the scene by skeptical journalist Will Byrne who is sure that foul play is at hand. As the pilgrims pore through the small town, young Anna and the ever-questioning Lib grow closer. The very thing that brought them together - the miracle of Anna’s starving - is now threatening to tear them apart.

The Wonder is a historical psychological drama produced by Netflix. The movie is directed by the Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio. The director is also one of the screenwriters, sharing a writing credit with Emma Donaghue and Alice Birch. Donaghue wrote the novel The Wonder is adapted from. Alice Birch is known for writing Lady Macbeth. Birch worked alongside cinematographer Ari Wegner on that project and they join forces again on The Wonder to help define the style and tone. Wegner served behind the camera for The Power of the Dog earning her an Academy Award nomination in the Best Cinematography category. The creative team adapting Emma Donoghue’s novel is rounded out by the musician Matthew Herbert. The English composer has previously worked with Sebastian Lelio on his movies Disobedience and A Fantastic Woman. The pair return to collaborate on The Wonder, setting the soundscape of Ireland in the late 1850s.

Heading the cast is Florence Pugh who is known for her roles in Lady Macbeth, Midsommer, and Little Women. The English actress has been nominated for an Academy Award and two BAFTAs. In this role she takes on the English nurse, Lib Wright questing for truth in the miraculous happenings in a small Irish village.
