In the year 2517, the Serenity spaceship is drifting through a distant galaxy with its misfit crew. Far from the centralized power of the Alliance, nine crew members try to keep a low profile while making enough money to survive in these remote reaches. Led by their captain, Mal, and his second mate, Zoe, the crew face the dangers of the Alliance as well as a savage cannibal race of humans known as the Reavers.
