Experience the Targaryen’s rule and discover how the family lost their control of the Seven Kingdoms. Taking place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon chronicles the political and familial turmoil that lead to the infamous Dance of the Dragons. House of the Dragon is a prequel based on George R. R. Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. It takes place in continuity with Game of Thrones, which ran from 2011 until 2019. The fantasy series was created for television by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal.

Paddy Considine sits on the Iron Throne as King Viserys Targaryen, the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms. Viserys’ younger brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen, is portrayed by Matt Smith. Emma D’Arcy stars as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Viserys’ first born child who waits to become the first female ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Rhys Ifans plays Ser Otto Hightower, one of the king’s closest confidants and father of Lady Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke. Known as the most beautiful woman in the Seven Kingdoms, Alicent was raised in the Red Keep and is an important figure in the king’s inner circle. Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon, head of the house of Velaryon and the most famous seafarer in the history of Westeros. Eve Best takes on the role of Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, a character also known as “The Queen Who Never Was” after her grandfather, King Jaehaerys, selected her cousin Viserys instead of her as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Sonoya Mizuno plays Mysaria, a dancer and Prince Daemon’s most trusted ally.

Source Material

House of the Dragon is a spinoff of HBO’s hugely popular series, Game of Thrones. Both of the series draw inspiration from A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy novels written by George R. R. Martin. A Game of Thrones, the first of these books, was published in 1996 and opened up literary fans to a world of rival families, a kingdom’s future hanging in the balance, and, of course, dragons. The events that take place in House of the Dragon are taken from Martin’s novel, Fire and Blood. The book explores the history of House Targaryen, one of the prominent families in A Song of Ice and Fire. The family ruled the Seven Kingdoms for nearly 300 years and “Fire and Blood” are the words emblazoned on their coat of arms. The Targaryens are famed for their origins – they hail from Essos, a continent to the east of Westeros – as well as their trademark ice blonde hair, and their famous dragons. Martin would go on to write five Game of Thrones books with two more on the way. The wait for the novels impacted more than just his loyal fans – the storylines of season 6, 7, and 8 of Game of Thrones were created without any new books to use as material guides. As House of the Dragon is a prequel series, much of the plot takes place 200 years before the events of the Game of Thrones TV show and is based on short stories and novellas written by Martin.
