Synopsis

Mermaid Ariel dreams of life on land

Princess Ariel has lived her whole life in Atlantica, which her father, King Triton rules over. She is fascinated by humans and their world, while her father is deeply prejudiced against the humans above the water’s surface. Ariel is rebellious and will stop at nothing to learn more about the foreign world she admires. Her curiosity soon lands her in trouble as she strikes a deal with the nefarious sea-witch Ursula and has to deal with the consequences.

What to know

Rob Marshall directs The Little Mermaid live-action remake

The Little Mermaid is a live-action musical film and remake of the original 1989 animated film. It is produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into The Woods). Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and David Magee (Mary Poppins Returns) wrote the screenplay with Lin-Manuel Miranda (Encanto, Moana), Marc Platt (La La Land, Cruella), John DeLuca (Memoirs of a Geisha) and Rob Marshall producing.

Alan Menken, who composed the music for the original film, returns to compose for the remake. Original songs from the 1989 film are set to be included in the film alongside new material written by Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Halle Bailey, best known as one half of the Grammy award nominated musical duo Chloe X Halle, makes her feature film debut as Princess Ariel. Prince Eric plays Jonah Hauer-King and Academy Award winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) is King Triton. Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is Ursula and Emmy Award nominee Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer) is Sebastian. Jacob Tremblay (Wonder), Awkwafina (The Farewell), Jude Akuwudike and Lorena Andrea round up the main cast.
