I Remember Mama (1948)

The ups and downs of a Norwegian immigrant family 

Marta Hanson’s daughter, aspiring writer Katrin, reminisces about her beloved mother in this film that portrays a Norwegian immigrant family in San Francisco at the turn of the century. We follow the family’s struggles and successes, as well as the dynamics among the colorful characters in their home, from their Charles Dickens–loving father to their highbrow lodger. Through it all, the matriarch never loses her good humor. The film is an ode to dedicated mothers everywhere.
