After their death, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine decide that they aren't interested in the afterlife. Instead, the pair take on a new path: supernatural detective investigations. Edwin is the mind and Charles is the muscle and together they form the Dead Boy Detectives. Taking on cases that involve supernatural interference they face down all manner of monsters with a little help from Crystal the clairvoyant.

Dead Boy Detectives is a supernatural detective comedy-drama television show. It is based on the DC Comics characters developed by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. The show is created by American screenwriter and producer Steve Yockey who is known for the series The Flight Attendant and Doom Patrol. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions, Jeremy Carver Productions, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Television for Netflix.
Dead Boy Detectives features an ensemble cast that includes George Rexstrew starring as Edwin Payne; Jayden Revri as Charles Rowland; Kassius Nelson plays Crystal Palace; Briana Cuoco stars as Jenny the Butcher; Ruth Connell plays the Night Nurse; Yuyu Kitamura stars as Niko; and Jenn Lyon stars as Esther. There are recurring roles in the series for Lukas Gage, Michael Beach, Joshua Colley, Lindsey Gort, Caitlin Reilly, Max Jenkins, and David Iacono.
The television show is set in the same universe as The Sandman, both shows are based on comics written by Neil Gaiman. The main characters of the Dead Boy Detectives, Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, first appeared in The Sandman comics Volume 25. Kirby Howell-Baptise reprises her role as Death from The Sandman in Dead Boy Detectives.
The series was originally intended for the streaming service Max but was dropped after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the reins at DC. The show did not fit into their plans for the DC Universe and was picked up by Netflix instead.
