Three odd families grow up together and learn to love each other despite differences

In California, the lives of three very different families are connected by the charismatic patriarch Jay Pritchett. The two children from his first marriage Mitchell and Claire, are both raising unconventional families of their own. Jay has also remarried and is making a new family with his second wife Gloria. Across culture, sexuality, and tradition, these families all function differently but find themselves caught up in the same adventures.
