The Jason Bourne franchise brought a fresh take on the global spy/espionage genre as a whole when initially released. When James Bond was rebooted in 2006 with Casino Royale, the character seemingly took inspiration from the grittier Bourne universe and introduced audiences to a less refined, more hardened Bond. Based on the spy book series by Robert Ludlum, the Bourne films featured in the original Matt Damon-led trilogy were raw and enigmatic, filmed with shaky camera techniques and real stunts. They featured the intriguing Treadstone storyline and explored the complexities of Jason Bourne’s character through each installment. Damon spearheaded the first 3 Bourne films portraying Jason Bourne, a damaged CIA agent with memory loss who is constantly on the run.
Doug Liman directed the first entry into the Bourne film series in 2002 with The Bourne Identity. Paul Greengrass directed the two subsequent films with The Bourne Supremacy in 2004 and The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007. In 2012, the franchise was rebooted with The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz. The film was directed by Tony Gilroy and although it is the only Bourne installment to not include Matt Damon, it went on to gross over $276 million worldwide. Damon and Greengrass returned to the universe in 2016 with the release of Jason Bourne. The film worked as a direct sequel to 2007’s Ultimatum and grossed over $415 million at the global box office. Here are all the Bourne movies in order and where to find them.
