Synopsis
An undercover Viet Cong soldier winds up in an American city
Captain is a devoted member of the North Vietnamese guerrilla army, the Viet Cong. Acting as a spy in the South Vietnamese army, he is responsible for delivering reliable intel about the enemy from within. But when he is suddenly sent to the United States to live within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, his mission changes. Now he must navigate his newly divided loyalties and decide who he wants to be.

A24 and HBO team up with Park Chan-wook for a Vietnamese spy thriller
The Sympathizer is a comedy spy thriller show based on the 2015 novel of the same name written by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Adapting the Pulitzer Prize-winning fiction are co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar. South Korean director Park Chan-wook is known for his movies such as Oldboy, Stoker, and Decision to Leave. He is also responsible for directing the series. Dom McKellar is a Canadian filmmaker and actor known for the movies Last Night and Crimes of the Future. The Sympathizer is produced by A24, Team Downey, Rhombus Media, Cinetic Media, and Moho Film for HBO.
The cast of the series features Hoa Xuande in the lead role as the Captain. Xuande is known for starring in the Netflix series, Cowboy Bebop. He is joined by Hollywood icon Robert Downey Jr. who portrays multiple antagonists in the series. Multi-award-winning actress Sandra Oh has a recurring role in the series as Ms. Sofia Mori. The cast also includes Fred Nguyen Khan as Bon; Toan Le as the General; Duy Nguyen as Man; Alan Trong as Sonny; Ky Duyen as Madame; Kieu Chinh as the Major’s mother; and Kayli Tran as the Communist Spy. The Sympathizer was released on Max from April 14, 2024.
