What to know

A number of original High School Musical alumni appear in fourth season of Disney+ meta-mockumentary series

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4 is the fourth season for the mockumentary musical drama TV series created by Tim Federle for Disney+. The series is inspired by Peter Barsocchini’s High School Musical franchise which began in 2006 with the massively successful film starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. The franchise went on to produce two additional main films and a spin-off film along with numerous books, comics, live shows and video games. The series takes place in a fictionalized version of East High School, the same school where the original films were filmed. It revolves around a group of theatre-loving teenagers who come together to put on a production of High School Musical: The Musical. Each subsequent season of the series focuses on a different musical and delves into the characters' journeys as they navigate friendships, romance, personal interests, self-discovery and family dynamics.

Olivia Rodrigo, who became a breakthrough star during the series’ first two seasons and made a guest appearance in season 3, does not appear as Nini in season 4. Creator Federle shared his perspective on Nini's story, emphasizing that not every character can have a flawless, happy ending each season. However, he expressed that there is always the potential for a future where individuals embark on new journeys that may lead to greater personal growth and self-discovery.

Matt Cornett, Saylor Bell, and Adrian Lyles reprise their roles as E.J. Caswell, Maddox, and Jet, respectively. A number of cast members return as series regulars including Joshua Bassett as Ricky, Sofia Wylie as Gina, Dara Reneé as Kourtney, Julia Lester as Ashlyn, Frankie Rodriguez as Carlos, Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn and Liamani Segura as Emmy. Kylie Cantrall, Matthew Sato, Caitlin Reilly and Vasthy Mompoint are all new additions to the cast. There are also a number of original High School Musical alumni also appearing in the season including Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Bart Johnson and Alyson Reed.
