Dune: Part Two is one of the most anticipated films of the year and the wait for it will now be a little while longer. The sequel is officially set to debut in theaters on March 15, 2024, pushed four months from its original release date of November 3, 2023.

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced the rescheduling today and comes on the heels of a few chief studios rearranging their future theatrical releases because of the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA guilds striking for better pay and working conditions. Other studios including Sony and Disney have previously announced major changes to their upcoming schedules, with many of the titles being of significant importance to them like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and numerous additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Timothée Chalamet leads as Duke Paul Atreides in the upcoming Dune entry while Zendaya stars alongside him as the young Fremen warrior Chani. The conditions of the SAG strike specifically prohibits stars from promoting their future films. This likely led to the decision to delay Dune: Part Two as it still remains unknown whether the strike will continue through to November and beyond.

The news comes as an obvious shock since the film’s initial release date was only three months away at the time of writing. Its marketing campaign has already released a number of captivating trailers with a major IMAX run set for November now needing to be reconsidered. Thankfully for fans of the IMAX experience, there are still a number of titles that remain on schedule (at least, for now). These include The Equalizer 3, The Marvels and Wonka.

WBD’s schedule experienced a further chain reaction due to this change. The studio revealed that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's release date is moved from March 15 to April 12, 2024. Additionally, the animated Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim film, originally set for April 12, 2024, is now delayed to December 13, 2024. Other WBD movies such as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple are still scheduled for release in December. Variety had mentioned before that the studio was considering pushing back some releases to 2024, however these two titles remain likely to keep their original December dates.

What To Expect In Dune: Part Two

While we eagerly await an additional four month wait, the few plot details we're aware of continue to be a key reason for the high levels of anticipation surrounding Dune: Part Two.

During his appearance at CinemaCon in April, director Denis Villeneuve indicated that the sequel would pick up right where the initial entry left off and would build upon the grand groundwork established in Dune. He further assured that the sequel would be more “action-packed”, with a larger-scale war and more intense sequences. He was joined by Chalamet and Zendaya during the appearance where they provided a sneak peek at a scene featuring their two characters sitting on the sand dunes. It then switches to Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan who is shown questioning whether Paul is still alive.

They also provided a glimpse of Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen as he intensely screams. Paul appears once more, this time amidst a sandstorm, and then the scene shifts to him standing in front of a crowd. Speaking about Feyd, Villeneuve described him as being a deranged Olympic sword expert mixed with rockstar Mick Jagger.

Covering the second half of Frank Herbert's novel, the sequel will ultimately follow Paul Atreides as he takes on a leadership role among the Fremen, joined by Chani. Rebecca Ferguson reprises her role as Lady Jessica and previously referred to the film as being an unreal “gut-punch” compared to the first installment:

"I’m smiling so much right now. It's so fucking good. I get emotional talking about it because I love Denny [Villeneuve] and I love Greig [Fraser] and I love the team. But dude, number one is phenomenal and big and grandiose, and then you go close-ups and the imagery and the acting. Yeah, it's all great. It's fucking nothing compared to number two. Number two, it's like a fucking gut punch. It's unreal."

Other returning cast members of the expansive cast include Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling and Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. There are also a number of new additions to the cast consisting of Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Academy Award winner Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Souheila Yacoub and Tim Blake Nelson.

Dune: Part Two will be released in theaters on March 15, 2024.
