James Clavell's celebrated novel receives Hulu adaptation led by Hiroyuki Sanada
Shōgun is a historical-drama miniseries based on the book by James Clavell. The miniseries is co-created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks for Hulu and FX. There was a previous television adaptation of the novel which aired on NBC in 1980 and was led by Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune.
Justin Marks has previously worked on movies including Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, The Jungle Book and Top Gun: Maverick. O. Henry Award finalist Rachel Kondo is best known for her short story titled "Girl of Few Seasons." The two collaborators executive produce the miniseries as well with Edward L. McDonnell, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca and Michaela Clavell. Hiroyuki Sanada and Eriko Miyagawa are additional producers. Directors on Shōgun include Jonathan van Tulleken, Charlotte Brändström, Hiromi Kamata and Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour.
Shōgun is led by Cosmo Jarvis as Pilot Major John Blackthorne and Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. The supporting cast features Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba No Kata, Tokuma Nishioka as Toda "Iron Fist" Hiromatsu, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Ako as Daiyoin Lady Iyo, Shinnosuke Abe as Toda Buntaro, Yasunari Takeshima as Muraji, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, Toshi Toda as Sugiyama, Hiro Kanagawa as Igurashi and Néstor Carbonell as Vasco Rodrigues. Shōgun season 1 was released on Hulu on February 27, 2024.
