Jin Wang is an average American high-school teen figuring out his school and social life, in addition to his Chinese-American identity. But when he meets Wei-Chen, an exchange student from China, his reality becomes an exciting multidimensional adventure fused with Chinese mythology.
American Born Chinese is a fantasy action series produced by 20th Television for Disney+. The series is based on a graphic novel of the same title by Gene Luen Yang. The screenplay is written by Kelvin Yu, while Destin Daniel Cretton directs and executive produces. Lucy Liu and Peng Zhang are also confirmed as guest directors on the series. Top Asian-American fashion designers Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim collaborate with costume designer Joy Cretton to create the stunning costumes featured in the series.
Ben Wang plays Jin Wang, the teen caught in mythological battles at the heart of the story. Cast members from Everything, Everywhere, All At Once reunite for American Born Chinese, including Academy award-winner Michelle Yeoh as the mythical Goddess Guanyin; Academy award-winner Ke Huy Quan as the fictional ‘90s sitcom character Freddy Wong; and Academy-award nominee Stephanie Hsu as another goddess figure, Shiji Niangniang. Daniel Wu plays an all-powerful god named Sun Wukong (aka ‘The Monkey King’). Yeo Yann Yann and Chin Han play Jin’s parents, Christine and Simon Wang, while Jim Liu takes on the role of the adventurous exchange student Wei-Chen. Sydney Taylor rounds out the cast as Amelia, Jin’s schoolmate and crush.
