Synopsis
Jin comes face-to-face with the power of his heritage in American Born Chinese
Jin Wang is a surly teenager struggling with both home and school. The cultural gap between his parents' generation and his own is beginning to take shape and his home life is dominated by the tension he feels with his Chinese identity. Meanwhile, at a new high school, Jin is one of just three Asian students. Feeling isolated everywhere he turns, Jin needs something to change. On the first day of the new school year, something does. When Jin meets a foreign exchange student, he finds himself wrapped up in a mythical match-up between the Gods of Chinese mythology.

Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh stars in Disney's fantasy adventure show 'American Born Chinese'
American Born Chinese is a fantasy action television series based on the graphic novel of the same name. The show is produced by 20th Television for Disney+. Charles and Kelvin Yu write the screenplay for the show. Destin Daniel Cretton is the series director and executive producer. Lucy Liu and Peng Zhang are confirmed to be guest directing in the series. The costume design is handled by Asian-American designers Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim.
The series features the talents of award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh who plays the mythical Goddess Guanyin. Screen and stage actress, Stephanie Hsu portrays Shiji Niangniang, another ancient Goddess. Actor Ben Wang plays Jin Wang, the teen caught up in the legendary drama. Jim Liu takes the role of Wei-Chen, the new student whose presence unleashes the drama. Other famous characters from Chinese folklore include Princess Iron Fan, portrayed by Poppy Liu and Sun Wukong played on screen by Daniel Wu. American Born Chinese was released on Disney+ on May 24th, 2023.
