10. Everything Everywhere All at Once

The story of a Chinese immigrant trying to file her taxes doesn’t seem so thrilling at first. But in the hands of the directors, The Daniels, this premise turns into a multiverse sci-fi adventure epic with intergenerational struggle and heartfelt performances from all of the stars. The movie features the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, and Ke Huy Quan. Everything Everywhere All at Once won seven Academy awards and was one of 2022’s best movies.

Everything Everywhere All at Once can be streamed on Apple TV+, Paramount+, and others.

9. The Whale

Based on the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, The Whale features the winning combination of director Darren Aronofsky and lead star Brendan Fraser. The movie earned Fraser an Academy Award for Best Actor and is a moving psychological drama with a father-daughter relationship at its heart. Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is known for making cerebral movies that challenge his audience and this one is no exception.

The Whale can be streamed on fuboTV and Apple TV+

8. Dunkirk

Hot on the heels of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Dunkirk is another powerful movie from the same director that offers a completely different take on war. While Oppenheimer is still wowing audiences in theaters, movie lovers at home can see his stark and impressive vision of World War I. With an incredible score from frequent Nolan collaborator Hans Zimmer, Dunkirk is an epic war movie and one of the best in the genre. The movie features performances from Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, and a sneaky cameo from superstar Harry Styles.

Dunkirk can be streamed on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Max.

7. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

With the sequel movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dominating the summer box office, it’s time to brush up on Sony's first big animated Spider-Man feature. The movie has a host of incredible voice cameos including the likes of Liev Schreiber, Nicolas Cage, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kimiko Glenn. As with the colorful sequel, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse shines through the main performances of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy. The movie is a feast for the eyes with incredible animation and an emotional plot that keeps the stakes dangling high.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse can be streamed on fuboTV and Apple TV+.

6. John Wick: Chapter 4

Action hero Keanu Reeves returns as John Wick in the fourth movie of the John Wick franchise. John Wick: Chapter 4 brings out some of the best performances in the franchise so far including Laurence Fishburne’s Bowrey King, Ian McShane as Winston Scott, and a new villain played by Bill Skarsgard. The movie is once again in the trusty hands of director Chad Stahelski, who directed all previous movies in the franchise and first met Keanu Reeves when working as a stunt coordinator on The Matrix. Fans of the action genre absolutely cannot miss this neo-noir tale of revenge with some of the best fight scenes you’ll see this year.

John Wick: Chapter 4 can be watched on Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, and others.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Producer Michael Bay’s first stab at the pizza-loving Ninja Turtles is one to watch for fans who are gearing up to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The movie features the likes of Megan Fox, Johnny Knoxville, and Will Arnett. This live-action take on the Turtles was first released in 2014 and offers something very different to the animated movie from Seth Rogen which is in cinemas now. With a cameo appearance from Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, the movie pays homage to the original comics while making some big creative shifts away from the original story.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ among others.

4. The Meg

There’s nothing like a giant shark movie to enjoy over the summer months and The Meg is hands down one of the best. The movie is directed by the legendary Jon Turteltaub who weaves his signature comedy through multiple big action sequences. The Meg has action hero Jason Statham in the lead role as rescue diver Jonas Tyler. Attempting to survive the attack of a giant megalodon, Tyler and crew must give everything they have to defeat the ancient shark. With Meg 2: The Trench making waves in theaters right now, watching the original movie is a great way to prepare, though fair warning nothing can prepare you for a megalodon.

The Meg can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video, fuboTV, and Max.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

It’s never easy to say goodbye and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does just that, signing off with the final movie in the Guardians trilogy. Director James Gunn offers an emotional farewell to beloved characters such as Rocket, Star-Lord, Gamora, and Nebula. The movie also features brilliant performances from Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff who play Drax and Mantis, a pair whose chemistry is a joy to watch. From directors Aaron Hovrath and Michael Jelenic comes an incredible adaptation of the Nintendo characters from the game Mario. With smooth colorful animation, the movie is a treat for the eyes and features wonderful voice acting from the likes of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day.
