Barbie is an upcoming romantic comedy co-written and directed by Greta Gerwig, and produced by LuckyChap Entertainment and Mattel Films. The movie is inspired by the iconic doll franchise and has long been in the works, but production didn’t pick up steam until 2019 when Margot Robbie was hired as the title character and executive producer.

Greta Gerwig signed onto the project in 2021 alongside her partner Noah Baumbach. The pair co-wrote the screenplay, causing an outpouring of excitement. The enthusiasm made perfect sense – the duo have a long list of highly acclaimed cinematic accomplishments. Gerwig wrote and directed Ladybird and Little Women, two movies nominated for a slew of awards. Baumbach is the creative mind behind films such as Marriage Story, and co-wrote Frances Ha.

An all-star cast promises a story worthy of Barbie’s iconic status. Barbie is played by Margot Robbie with Ryan Gosling as Ken by her side. Also part of the cast are Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Will Farrell, NIcola Coughlan, and America Ferrera.
